Post-fire forest recruitment failure: earth observation and landscape ecology approaches

Baxter R. (1)

In this short talk Dr. Robert Baxter will introduce the key issues being addressed (incorporating both remote sensing and ecological studies) in the determination and understanding of post-fire coniferous forest regeneration in south eastern Russia.

Context:
• Following fire, forests usually regrow over time from recruitment of young tree seedlings that eventually develop into mature forest, if not burned over this development period.
• In some cases though, fire severity or frequency of occurrence may lead to this return to forest not happening.
• Different trajectories of vegetation change following forest fire may result from a range of factors.
• Both earth observation and landscape ecology approaches are being used to better understand post-fire vegetation change in a changing climate.

Our programme of research is a bi-lateral study incorporating Universities from the United Kingdom with the Institute of Forest, Krasnoyarsk, Russia.

Ключевые слова: forest regeneration, landscape ecology, fires, post-fire regeneration
