A brief outline of the Russian-UK project, which has the aim of developing a new methodology for measuring the dynamics of the phytomass of northern forests of Russia, applying it to the period from the year 2000 to the present day, and linking the dynamic behaviour to climate change. The project combines remote sensing data from satellites and unmanned autonomous vehicles (‘drones’) with climate and ground survey data. Two field campaigns have so far taken place, in the Khibiny Mountains on the Kola Peninsula, and around Yakutsk in the Sakha Republic.
